Resin Fillings Q & A

What are resin fillings?

Resin fillings are dental restorations that repair cavities. They’re tooth-colored, contain no metal, and blend in with your smile.

Applying a resin filling to a tooth typically takes less than an hour. There’s no downtime or recovery period so that you can return to work or other routine activities immediately after your appointment.

Dental cavities are a common but treatable problem. Researchers estimate that 92% of Americans between the ages of 20-64 have at least one cavity. By getting a resin filling, you can reduce the risk of future complications and restore your chewing and biting abilities.

What does getting resin fillings involve?

At North Hawaii Dental LLC, getting a resin filling takes a single appointment.

Before prescribing a filling, your provider conducts an oral exam, asks about your symptoms, and takes digital X-rays. Your provider uses the X-rays to determine the extent of your tooth decay and to develop a treatment plan.

If they determine you qualify for a resin filling, your provider administers a local anesthetic. Once your mouth is numb, they use a specialized tool to remove the decaying portion of your tooth enamel. Next, your provider sterilizes the tooth and applies a thin layer of composite resin, one layer at a time.

After applying each layer, your provider points a special light at the resin. The light triggers a reaction, causing the resin to harden and cure. Once the resin dries, your provider assesses your bite and trims off any excess material. Then, they send you home with care instructions.

How long does it take for resin fillings to set?

Resin fillings set right away. As soon as you leave North Hawaii Dental LLC, you can return to normal activities like biting and chewing. Some people experience mild discomfort and increased tooth sensitivity, but these symptoms should subside within 24-48 hours.

Are resin fillings painful?

Resin fillings are safe and usually well-tolerated. As previously mentioned, though, you might experience some tooth sensitivity. To minimize any discomfort, North Hawaii Dental LLC recommends:

  • Brushing and flossing more gently than usual
  • Avoiding extremely hot or extremely cold foods and beverages
  • Taking over-the-counter pain medication
  • Avoiding acidic foods
  • Using a desensitizing toothpaste

If your bite feels off or your symptoms last for more than a few days, contact your North Hawaii Dental LLC provider right away.
